چکیده

This study analyzed subtle and blatant prejudice toward Chinese people expressed by 276 Italian adolescents and young adults, with and without friends from other ethnic groups. Italian version of Subtle and Blatant Prejudice Scale referred to Chinese people (Pettigrew & Meertens, 1995; Manganelli Rattazzi & Volpato, 2001) and three Semantic Differentials (Falanga et al., 2010) to analyze the representation of Self, the Italians (ingroup), and the Chinese (outgroup) were used. Young adults showed lower levels of subtle and blatant prejudice than adolescents; subjects with friends from other ethnic groups expressed lower levels in some components of subtle and blatant prejudice than the others; Chinese representation affected levels of ethnic prejudice. © 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Comparing intergroup contact effects on blatant and subtle prejudice in adolescents: a multivariate multilevel model.

BACKGROUND The literature has rarely paid attention to the differential influence of intergroup contact on subtle and blatant prejudice. METHOD This hypothesis was tested with data from a cross-sectional design on 1,655 school-aged native Spanish...

The ascent of man: Theoretical and empirical evidence for blatant dehumanization.

Dehumanization is a central concept in the study of intergroup relations. The present research attempts to refocus theoretical and empirical attention on blatant dehumanization, examining when and why it provides explanatory power beyond...

Opening closed minds: the combined effects of intergroup contact and need for closure on prejudice.

Five studies tested whether need for closure (NFC) moderates the relation between intergroup contact and prejudice toward immigrants. The results consistently showed that intergroup contact was more strongly associated with reduced levels of prejudice among people high in NFC compared to people low in NFC. Studies 1 (N = 138 students) and 2 (N = 294 adults) demonstrated this moderator effect on...

Forms of ethnic prejudice: Assessing the dimensionality of a Spanish- language version of the Blatant and Subtle Prejudice Scale

Meertens’ subtle and blatant scales (1992, 1995). Its objective is to determine if the structure originally proposed by these authors is supported by data collected in the Chilean social environment and if this instrument, that theoretically detects modern prejudice manifestations, is useful to appropriately distinguish between old and new forms of ethnic prejudice. The premise underlying new f...
